How to update an oak fireplace + trim and LOVE it!

This house sat on the market for almost two months.

It is in a beautiful neighborhood, with large acreage properties and beautiful homes. Yet, we were only the second people to go through it and I know why….. OAK. Lots of it. Through out the entire home.

I have a feeling it scared potential buyers. Lucky for me, I love oak. Here is a little Copper Corners secret……. you do not need to paint it. You do not need to rip it out. You simply need to know how to work with it and make it cool again ;).

Let’s dive in!

Here are the two photos I took of the living room when we walked through the house.

Yes, the fireplace is hideous (in my opinion). The oak doesn’t look fab. The tile is dated and blah. But I knew that it had potential. I knew that I could make it fabulous without demo and without costing thousands of dollars!

The next photo is worse. Not everyone is blessed with great taste. But that, m’dear, is fixable!!!

I feel bad writing this…. but…..this couch. Oh man. It could be cute. In the right space. But here, next to an ugly fireplace, next to an ugly side table, next to a dated lamp, next to dated drapes…..is just not right. You can take something ugly and make it pretty, by surrounding it with other pretty items. But ugly on ugly on ugly will never work. Take note. I hope the previous owners of this house are not reading this right now. Yikes!!!

The first thing I did when we got the keys to the house was remove those drapes and then paint the fireplace. I bought a fire safe grill spray paint (order online, here), taped everything and sprayed the gold insert. I’m not a huge fan of spray painting stuff, but this has held up beautifully!!

Next I painted a coat of Kilz (order online, here) on all wood and the surround tile. Once that was dry I went over everything with black paint. Careful when choosing a black paint at the store. sometimes what looks “black” in the store will actually look blue or green once it is in your home. A black that I like is Tricorn Black by Sherwin Williams.

I painted my fireplace BLACK during a time when WHITE WAS ALL THE RAGE. Trim was getting painted white, cabinets and full kitchens white, walls white, staircases white, everything white. And then there was me…. the only person at Lowes buying black. Ha!

The reason I did that is because I know my colors and I know how they interact with each other. White wouldn’t have worked for the look I wanted here. Black has a way of making oak wood look and feel a bit more ‘contemporary’ and sleek. My friends (yes, even Instagram friends) thought I was nuts going against the ‘white’ grain, but I had to show them to make them believe ;).

We have 9’ ceilings, and somehow they looked very low. Nothing in the room was giving the room height. All windows are low and at the same height. The fireplace was even lower. With a level, I drew lines on either side of the fireplace. I then brought the black paint all the way up, onto the crown molding and ended at the ceiling. THIS MADE SUCH A BIG DIFFERENCE!!!!!

Another EASY thing that makes a big difference…. hang those curtains higher, m’dear!!! Such a simple way to give any room height. Also, instead of hanging the rods right at the window lines, spread them out a tad. This will give the effect of bigger and taller windows.

Our walls are Bleached Shadow by Valspar. I have this color through out my home. This color has a plum undertone that works beautifully in neutralizing the orange/yellow in oak wood. Be careful using this color with white trim, though. It may end up looking purple.

SOFA. So many of you were shocked multiple times by this sofa today, 😂ha! First, when I turned it from an L shaped sectional into a regular sized sofa. And second, when I removed the slipcovers and washed it completely. And it looked brand new✨. I swear by Pottery Barn slipcovered furniture. Most of the covers are machine washable and look better with every wash. Find my exact sectional/sofa HERE.

Striped chair.

Mirrors on fireplace. I couldn’t find my exact ones anymore, but I did find these that had been my second choice!

Candle pillars on the fireplace. I could only find my wood pillars. The glass are sold out.

Artwork above fireplace. This is the ‘By Your Side’ paper print framed in Classic Champagne + mat.

RUGS. This is my favorite site for rugs. I always recommend getting 100% wool rugs with a medium to high pile. You can also try the ‘CC’ discount code for a % off!

Ottoman. I wish so badly that I had a link for you, but this was a hand-me-down from an aunt. It is old. Sorry!!

Ok, m’dears!! I hope I helped inspire some of your oak spaces!! If I forgot to mention something or you have a question, leave it in the comments below .

Also, if you love my posts, please save them to your Pinterest, instagram or forward them to a friend :)!

An Update On The Revamped Oak Office, Turned Movie / Tv / Play Room

Hi Guys!!

We finally added wallpaper!!! If you want to see this room from the very beginning, check out the post HERE.

I completed this room with the Cheerio Wallpaper in Blush. I chose the prepasted and used the 9’ strips, because I have 9’ ceilings. This wall is 10.5’ long, so I used 6 strips total.

A few reasons I chose this Cheerio design are because:

1. It is freaking phenomenal.

2. I wanted a touch of whimsical, while still being classic

3. This design has so many great muted colors, that if I ever decide to change the walls, I can pull from the beautiful blues, greens, browns and creams that are in the wallpaper, easily creating a completely different vibe with just a new paint color.

4. I already have the original Cheerio wallpaper in my half bath and LOVE it.

See those other colors I mentioned? I could easily paint this room a subtle blue and completely change the feel of it.

It took me about 2.5 hours to install this pre-pasted wallpaper. If you would like to see the process, you can find me on Instagram under @CopperCorners. There I have saved the wallpapering process in my highlights :).

I had put this entire room together to be our new movie/tv room and guess what I forgot to get….. a tv🙃. So we just looked at ourselves in the mirror for a few weeks. ha!

Once we got the tv, the rest of the room came together beautifully.

Next I added the Bathhouse Artwork because it is a stunning piece that I wish I had in every room of my house. This is the 24x32 paper print in the Classic Gold Frame + Mat.

We love this room so much!! It has even turned into one of my husband’s favorite rooms in our house. Everything about it is cozy and we typically end up in here every night as a family to watch either Home Alone, What About Bob or some other late 80’s\90’s movie ;).

Every sofa in my house is from Pottery Barn. My oldest one is over 18 years old and is still in perfect shape. I always recommend the slipcovered pieces, (especially in the twill fabric if you have kiddos) because they are super easy to remove, wash, dry and put back on. The sofa looks brand new after every wash, no matter what my children have done to it lately 🙃. Sectional Sofa. Also, Pottery barn and West Elm (the ottoman) always have white glove delivery, which means, they deliver, set it up and remove all of the packaging. Avoid an Ikea-Assembly fight with your partner at all costs!! Ha! Worth every penny.

Before I go, here is a little shot of the other side of the room. No room is complete without a lamp!! And of course a fabulous room calls for an extra fabulous floor lamp! Lighting at different elevations (lights are not just for the ceiling!) are what give a room that extra cozy feel, especially in the evening. I searched for a few months until I spotted THIS FLOOR LAMP. Once it arrived, it was everything I had hoped for.. Also, it arrived completely assembled!! Lord bless their heart because there is nothing nicer than opening a box and immediately having it function, and not having to put something together!! Cheers to that!! Drapes.

A few of my favorite things - best beach tent, beach chairs, chap stick and more!

Here are all of the links you have been asking for this week! These will link you to my amazon favorites page. I do not have a lot of items listed on my amazon favorites page, only a few. Mostly because I am a picky be-otch who only likes the best of the best, ha!

About the favorites this week:

The Neso tent. THIS IS A MUST. We use this tent all summer long in Michigan and we even bring it on vacation with us. It is so light weight (maybe 3 lbs) and gives us shade ALL DAY LONG. I want to hug whoever invented this thing because it is simply the best. Since I am a color freak… I prefer the coral color. It reflects a warm coral color…. giving you a warm glow, making you look tanner than what you really are. Where are all my pale girls, raise your hands🙋🏼‍♀️. Click HERE FOR TENT.

Next up, my sunglasses. I freaking love these sunglasses. They have some special coating to them that makes everything more visible. Not sure how thats possible, but I can see fish swimming under water, and when I take them off I see nothing. Where are all my blind girls at, ha 🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏽‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️. Click HERE for sunglasses. Lots of other fun colors as well!!

Everyone wants juicy, beautiful lips, right?! I discovered this chapstick, that is also a lip tint, and also has SPF 15. Its the quickest easiest thing to throw on and instantly gives you a polished look. My go-to color is the Plum Rose (I look good with a purple tint) , but they are all beautiful!! Click HERE FOR FAB LIPS.

These beach chairs are SO COMFORTABLE! Jordan (my husband) is a bigger guy and he loved these chairs! They are lightweight, have a cup holder and fit both skinny and big boned people ;). Click HERE FOR BEACH CHAIRS.

And we all know the minute we get to the beach we are “thirsty”. This drink mug will keep your drinks ICE cold. I have left it over night before and there was still ice in it the next day. It is big enough to hold liquids for the extra-thirsty people, but still skinny enough around the bottom to fit perfectly into a cupholder. And the koozie is the most fabulous koozie you will ever meet. It will make any drink-in-a-can feel classy and fabulous. The lid screws off, so it will fit a regular beer can and also fit a slim margarita (truly, lime-a-rita, white claw) can. Put your partners gross Busch Light in it and no one will ever know what disgusting-ness he/she is drinking. Mwahaahahahahahah. Click HERE to keep your drinks cold.
